Child Counseling, Play Therapy, and Art Therapy

At Rock Your Family, our child therapists, play therapists, and art therapy specialists guide each child to discover their self-worth, find their place in the world, and reach their potential within their family.

Play Therapy: What is it?

Play therapy utilizes play as a means of communication and expression for children. It's based on the belief that play is the natural language of children and that through play, children can express their emotions, thoughts, and experiences in a safe and non-threatening way.

The therapy involves various toys, games, and activities to help the child work through emotional, behavioral, or developmental issues. Play therapy can help children develop coping skills, improve self-esteem, reduce anxiety and stress, and resolve conflicts.

& Learn More About Art Therapy

What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapy is an experiential therapeutic approach that utilizes art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork in collaboration with traditional counseling techniques to achieve the desired treatment outcomes for therapy.  Art Therapy is utilized in a variety of settings and various levels of care to include mental health, rehabilitation, medical, educational, forensic, outpatient, in-patient, group, family, couples, and individual treatment.  All populations and ages can benefit from Art Therapy and no artistic talent or prior experience with art is necessary!

How does Art Therapy work?

The Art Therapist will engage clients in structured, intentional art therapy exercises to explore, express, and process whatever the identified problems or challenges might be.  The art process is healing in and of itself however the art products themselves can be used as a reference point in processing discussion for developing insight, exploring meaning, and gleaning invaluable information that aids in healing, growth, and equipping clients to make change.  Clients are able to explore thoughts and emotions, reconcile emotional conflicts, develop self-awareness, develop emotional and behavioral regulation, as well as improve communication and social skills.  Art Therapy complements other therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral and Biblical counseling, EMDR, and other outcomes-based approaches.

Why should I choose Art Therapy?

Art Therapy puts the client in the driver’s seat and empowers them to engage in activities that process trauma, emotions, and thought patterns in a non-threatening way that is at the client’s pace.  Sometimes there are no words to fully express what someone is dealing with, Art Therapy transcends language and enables expression, healing, and growth without necessarily having to verbalize what is happening or what has happened.  Engaging in Art Therapy can also expedite treatment as it can tap into the subconscious and help to reveal root issues without beating around the bush.  In contrast, traditional verbal therapy can sometimes take weeks or months before root issues come to light and clients are ready to process them.  Additionally, Art Therapy is excellent for developing a repertoire of healthy, prosocial coping skills and emotional outlets that clients and families can take home and implement independently.
