Helen Abels, LPCC

Helen is a Colorado Springs native who has recently returned to her home state from more than a decade of overseas missionary service. She is a graduate of Grand Canyon University where she attained her Masters of Science Degree in Clinical Mental Health.

Upon completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Helen spent 8 years serving as a full-time missionary with Youth With A Mission and 3 years with a Christian performing arts company. During this time in ministry, Helen co-led 11 discipleship/ministry internships, including leading groups to 50 countries. In these ministry communities, Helen was a lay counselor for staff and students, as well as conducted training seminars on trauma, communication, and cross-cultural issues in refugee camps, churches, and schools around the world. Helen also has years of experience serving her local church community through youth ministry at the middle, high school, and college level.

Since the completion of the season of ministry, Helen has been working as a counselor in a medicated treatment facility for opiate addiction as well as in intensive eating disorder treatment.

Through these rich experiences working with people around the world, Helen has developed a passion to help people heal and grow into who God created them to be. Helen has experience working with all kinds of trauma, (including sexual, emotional, and spiritual abuse), grief/bereavement, eating disorders, and navigating seasons of spiritual deconstruction. Having all of the above in her own story and family history, Helen has great compassion for the healing journey. Helen utilizes a client-centered approach and is well-versed in cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance commitment therapy (ACT).

When not helping others become comfortable in their own story, Helen can often be found in a CrossFit box attempting a new personal record lift with the barbell or sitting under a tree with her nose in a good book.
